The proximity of today’s Solemnity to yesterday’s Solemnity is intriguing and gives pause for thought. One could say that the Annunciation is the beginning of God’s mercy shown forth – not that Divine Mercy was ever absent – but its concrete and definitive expression in the Incarnation begins to take shape.

St Ephrem the Syrian said of Our Lady: ‘In her, God spun a garment with which to save us’. As we rejoice in the wonder of this feast, may we open ourselves to make our own ‘Fiat’ – ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to Thy Word’ – and may God bless us all on this most holy day.
